Another email from my Dad:

To our Dear Friends…..Thank you so much…the expressions of love prayer and support have truly been remarkable. It’s hard to recall what I’ve told or sent to people but here is the latest on Natalie as of 8am Tuesday January 13, 2009. We have been with her everyday until they ask us to leave due to various sterile medical procedures or shift changes (which happen 630-830 morning & evening). Her injuries continue to amaze us as she was spared any procedures to fix her pelvic fractures which (following a priesthood blessing) the doctors close examination determined that her bones were now sufficiently in place that they will heal properly on their own.

She began running a fever yesterday and her heat rate was rising which concerned the doctors. They did diagnostics to check for any blood clots in her lungs or heart, but found none. However, they discovered the source of trouble was that the area around her right lung (in the Pleural Cavity see below) fluid had accumulated faster than it could drain (probably due to the hyper-hydration she is on with her IVs). Yesterday they inserted a drainage tube in her right side and towards the back of the lung (this is where the fluid goes since she is on her back) which drained nearly one liter of fluid.

She responded well to this. Before the procedure I asked the doctor if he was experienced and he assured me he had done many of such drainage tubes, but that there is always some risk. I explained to him we were praying for his skills to be sharp and that they would be successful in doing this for Natalie.

He looked somewhat puzzled and said “OK, I’ll tell you if it makes a difference.” He seemed a bit skeptical as I explained how and why we pray for the doctors.

After the insertion procedure was done I asked him if it made a difference, and he said with a smile “Well, everything went perfectly during the procedures I believe it did.”

Today about Noon Natalie will have two more procedures, which will probably keep her away from us for most of the day. First they will move her ventilator and feeding tubes and reinsert the ventilator via a tracheostomy and the feeding tube through the abdomen. Next about 2pm they will repair her broken jaw and wire it shut. We hope this is the last of the surgical procedures she must endure.

This has been terrifically emotionally and physically draining, but we have many supports and countless friends, which makes all the difference.

Even in the midst of tragedy we feel the blessings of our Father in Heaven, and have seen his blessings extending to all those who know us and care enough to appeal to Him in prayer. Out of tragedy God can and does bring unity to His children despite the various beliefs we all have, and each ones’ understanding of His plan for all of His children, as brothers and sisters in Christ.

We are deeply in debt to Him and to all our friends like you and the countless others who know and love Him. Thank you and God bless you and yours also. Those who have experienced His presence and love can draw on the hope and knowledge, which He freely grants us in and through His Son Jesus Christ. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We truly appreciate your compassion and faith, which we share with you in Christ.

We administered a Priesthood blessing to he the last Wednesday and again on Sunday and have already witnessed several spiritual manifestations of angelic ministrations and miracles in Natalie recovery. We confidently know that more will be granted as time goes on. We now are simply prayerful and waiting and watching His work continue as Natalie completely recovers and returns to us, despite the challenges ahead, which will be many.

Thank you for your patience and love. I will try to keep people informed as time permits, or her condition changes. Generally I will write only as things change or something noteworthy occurs.

We are most sincerely grateful for all your loving words and prayers and countless expressions of support. Since she is in the Trauma Unit ICU of Fairfax Hospital, (http://www.inova.org/patient-and-visitor-information/facilities/inova-fairfax-hospital/index.jsp) there are many rules and restrictions regarding visiting access and there simply is no room for flowers etc. But please continue to keep us in your prayers….we need them more than you can possibly know. Feel free to share this with those who may be concerned.
