Praise

Aiden is going to start kindergarden this year! I can't believe it. I'm going to have a child in school? I'm excited for him, a little nervous about sending him off to be with kids I don't know, but mostly excited for him. (and the break for me will be nice too)

Since my kids' education has been on my mind lately I think it was inspired that I got this article in my e-mail the other day about how "the wrong kind of praise creates self-defeating behavior and the right kind motivates students to learn." It's talks about having a "growth mind-set" about learning and how praising our kids for being "smart" can be harmful, but praising their effort to learn and grow helps encourage their desire to try harder and learn more. Based on the way I felt in school growing up (If I didn't feel like I could do it successfully I was reluctant, or didn't want to, try it.), I completely believe that what this article says is true. In fact I STILL feel that way, and now I better understand why. It's changed the way I look at learning new things, and definitely how I will praise my kids.
