Aiden's butterflies

For Aiden's birthday, one of his friends gave him a butterfly garden.  Basically, we sent in a postcard and they sent us back a clear plastic jar with 4 caterpillars in it and "food" at the bottom (a brown pasty substance).  We got to watch the tiny caterpillars turn quickly into big fat caterpillars, and then migrate to the top of the jar and hang there and turn into their chrysalises.  Then we transfered them into a bigger butterfly cage and waited a week for them to emerge and become butterflies!  These pictures are from the day we released them.  One of the butterflies was very slow so it hung out and let the kids hold it.  The kids loved the whole experience.  Owen especially is into bugs right now so he was in heaven!  Kart and I found it fascinating too.  It really is neat to watch the life cycle of a butterfly.  I don't think I want to do it again (bugs are not my favorite thing), but it was fun to experience once. :)
