A Day in D.C.

Wow...talk about behind.  I still have christmas posts to do! Here's our day in Washington DC.

We rode the metro to DC to enjoy the Smithsonian museums and go on a cupcake run to several bakeries.  I love the metro and since Kart and the kids had never been on it I was excited to ride it with them!  The metro was my favorite way to get to the city when I was a teenager and I have lots of fun memories of riding it with my friends.

The kids loved the Museum of Natural History. The bug exhibit and the bones exhibit were their favorite.

I loved seeing the new animal exhibit.  It's totally different than the last time I was there.  I loved all the changes they made.

This elephant has always been one of my favorite parts of the museum.  It's the first thing you see when you walk in and is just so majestic! I love elephants.

The Smithsonian is right on the National Mall where you can see
the Washinton Monument or "the Pencil" as we called it as kids,

and the Capital.
(aren't those clouds gorgeous!?)

Next we went to my favorite Smithsonian museum, the Museum of American History.  It has really interesting exhibits about our country and cultural icons.

A live sit-in demonstration

A replica of Julia Child's kitchen...

Dorothy's slippers! I always love seeing those.
They're so old, and it's just awesome to see them in person.
A lot of things from this museum change but these have always been there.

Original muppets

After museums we started our cupcake tour.  I mapped out 3 that I wanted to try (there were many I wanted to see but I knew we only had time for a few).  So as we took the metro home we stopped at each one and got a few cupcakes from each shop to try when we got home.

And the one I was most excited to try (because I'd heard they started the cupcake trend and were suppose to be really good)...Sprinkles.

After a LONG day in DC we were all happy to get home, eat the delicious dinner dad was making us at home, and try our cupcakes!

My little niece Lillian! She's a cutie.

Okay...so I got 3 from each bakery and cut them all up so we could taste test them all against each other. After tasting them all, the verdict is....

Crumbs Bakery - the biggest by far, but dry and not as good as they looked. The apple streusel was the best one, but still not GREAT.

Hello Cupcake- very nice presentation.  I liked that the peppermint one had candy cane baked in the cake.  Good frosting on all of them.  The chocolate cake wasn't as chocolately as I'd like.  Overall not great either. Peppermint was the best one of this bunch.

Sprinkles- By FAR the winner!  Great cupcake texture. You could tell the strawberry one (and the others) was made with all natural ingredients (wasn't a bright food dyed pink, but more natural color).  Good frosting to cupcake ratio.  It was the most moist (Probably because the entire top is covered with frosting- sealing in moisture.) and most flavorful. I also love the design of their shop the most and the decorations on top of their cupcakes that also tell you what type of cupcake it is.  Definitely the best cupcakes of the night.  I think the cupcake shop I worked at, Cupcake Chic, rivals Sprinkles though.
It's safe to say I'm a new sprinkles fan! :)

YUM!
(I didn't eat ALL of those- I promise!  I only had a bite of each one unless I really liked it - which was only a few.)
I would love to do another tour de cupcakes next time I visit home.  It was so fun!
